The boxing match between retired heavyweight winner Mike Tyson and social media influencer Jake Paul has been delayed from its original July 20 date, Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions reported Friday.
The announcement comes days after the 57-year-old Tyson was conveyed to have suffered a medical scare on an aircraft, later recognised as an ulcer flare-up. While Tyson twittered that he handled 100% in the aftermath, he was reported in a follow-up talk to do only tiniest to light activity over the next periodic weeks.
Tyson and Paul reportedly decided to push back the fight, set to be poured on Netflix, to ensure an even recreating field. Their boxing match is now anticipated to be rescheduled to later in the year at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with a further date to be notified by next Friday.
Previously bought tickets will be honoured for the latest date, while fans who are unfit to attend will be suitable for a refund with SeatGeek.
Whenever the two are in the ring, it will be the biggest age gap in an experienced battle in boxing history, with Paul 31 years more youthful at 27 years old. Tyson turns 58 in June.
While both sides voiced trust the bout would still happen, Paul’s brother Logan might have tipped some pressure behind secure doors by offering to step in for Tyson and battle his brother should the Hall of Famer fall out.
The bout is the most significant event yet in Paul’s lucrative search to create a name for himself in boxing by battling a collection of former MMA fighters, hidden boxers and men more than a decade more senior than himself. His catalogue currently sits at 9-1, with his lone loss being a divided decision against Tommy Fury.
Tyson has not contested in an experienced bout since 2005 and hasn’t won one since 2003. He battled fellow great Roy Jones Jr. to a draw in a 2020 production bout. His description stays 50-6, with 44 wins by KO and two no-contests.
However several components of the boxing society, including ex-heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, had expressed reservations about the fight, saying respect Tyson could be hurt.
Tyson shrugged off the misgivings at a press meeting earlier this month, explaining his decision to produce to the ring as a no-brainer.
