More than 15 policemen and several citizens, including an Orthodox priest, were slaughtered by armed militants in Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan, its administrator Sergei Melikov declared in a video statement early Monday.
The gunmen opened fire on two Orthodox churches, a synagogue and a police post in two towns Sunday, according to the report.
Russia’s National Anti-Terrorist Committee expressed the attacks in the predominantly Muslim areas with a history of armed militancy as terrorist performance.
Six bandits were liquidated, the administrator explained.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were announced days of mourning in the area.
Militants attacked two Orthodox churches, a synagogue and a traffic police checkpoint in two towns in Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan, killing a priest and at least six police workers, Russian authorities declared on Sunday.

Dagestan’s Interior Ministry said a squad of armed men shot at a synagogue and a church in the town of Derbent, placed on the Caspian Sea. Both the church and the synagogue caught fire, according to a media report. Almost simultaneously, reports come into public about an attack on a church and a traffic police check post in the Dagestan capital Makhachkala.
There was no claim of responsibility for the fire’s damages. The administrators have declared a criminal probe on the charge of a terrorist act.
The administrators declared a counter-terrorist operation in the area. The Anti-Terrorist Committee said a priest and policemen were slaughtered in the attacks. It later reported that five gunmen were out from here. It wasn’t well distinct, however, how many militants were present in the attacks.
Russia’s state latest agency RIA Novosti cited the region’s Interior Ministry as saying that six policemen were slaughtered and 13 more were injured. Other news said a church guard was also slaughtered, and three citizens were also injured.
The Muftiate of Dagestan, a Muslim representative body, put the total number of those killed at nine people, including seven policemen, and said that 25 more individuals were injured. The conflicting numbers couldn’t be reconciled.
Russian state largest agency Tass cited law enforcement sources as saying that a Dagestani official was detained over his sons’ involvement in the attacks.
